E-BULLETIN OF THE HISTORIC DISTRICTS COUNCIL: Winter Events

E-BULLETIN OF THE HISTORIC DISTRICTS COUNCIL

November 2012, Volume 9, Number 5

At Home in Utopia has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 10, 2013 6-8pm at the Tribeca Fim Center!

At Home in Utopia,  written and directed by Michal Goldman,  tells the story of the Eastern European garment workers who joined together to create a “Bronx Bohemia” known as the Coops.  This cooperative apartment complex was built in 1925 on the corner of Allerton Avenue across from Bronx Park.  The Coops were what some would consider the ideal community; based on the philosophies of communal living and designed with the ideas of a bucolic setting in mind, the Coops were a “dream home” to many.  The residents wanted a design aesthetic that was uncommon in New York at the time; bright, airy and spacious, which was representative of the change that was sought to promote public health, safety and a sense of community.  The residents of the Coops were also politically active as advocates for racial equality during a time of severe distress, violence and social injustice.  Join us for this special screening and panel discussion of “At Home in Utopia”, where several of the former residents will to discuss their lives in the Bronx.

It’s Your Opportunity to Ask Questions!

Monday Morning Coffee Talks: Winter 2012-13

THIS Monday, December 3: Robert LiMandri, Commissioner, NYC Department of Buildings

8:30 am-10:00 am

Neighborhood Preservation Center, 232 East 11th Street, Between Second and Third Avenues, Manhattan

This program is FREE, but reservations are required and space is limited.  Please contact: [email protected]

From regulating more than 950,000 buildings to upholding countless technical codes and safety regulations, the Department of Buildings juggles many of the city’s most essential tasks. Homeowners renovating their property, developers laying out new plans for empty lots, and citizens concerned with the conditions of neighboring construction sites all rely on the DOB for help and assistance. Yet how the DOB functions on a daily basis – how it manages its monitoring duties, how it makes determinations on permit applications – is largely unknown to most New Yorkers. Department of Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri will address attendees’ questions on a wide range of topics, so come prepared to engage in an informal discussion centered around your most pressing issues and concerns.
