Bedford-Stuyvesant Aims for Landmark Status

Nearly two decades after it was first floated, a proposal to designate a small slice of Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn as a historic district finally appears to be getting somewhere.
For some, the development comes not a moment too soon.
“Many people stop me on the streets and ask, ‘What’s taking so long?’ “ said Morgan Munsey, an architectural historian who moved to the area four years ago and has been actively involved in a campaign to win the designation.
Back in 1993, when the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission initially gave Bedford-Stuyvesant the thumbs-down, it cited insufficient community support. This time around, the results could be different, thanks in part to the multiyear campaign by several local leaders and organizations.
“We’ve gone door-to-door speaking with residents and handing out literature, and we’ve had several letter-writing and postcard campaigns,” said Claudette Brady, who chairs the Bedford Corners Historic District Joint Block Association.
