Did you know that New York City tapped the Bronx River to supply citizens with drinking water in 1889? The population of NYC grew so fast after the Croton Aqueduct began delivering fresh reliable water (1842) that demand had exceeded what the Old Croton Aqueduct could supply. Interestingly in 1896, the lower Bronx River was labeled an “open sewer” because industry and residences were dumping their refuse into it.
Come bike along as Bronx native Mike Gupta explains the rich and conflicted history of the river, and we explore old remnants of the ill fated Bronx River Water System.
The ride is 10 miles long and will take 2.5 hours.
