Design Awards- Call for Entries

Design Awards-logo-web

HDC is seeking nominations for the 2014 Historic Districts Council Design Awards. Architects and owners may submit recently completed work, including alterations within historic districts and to historic buildings wherever in the city they may be.

Historic buildings and districts change over time: an important part of our mission is to encourage changes of high quality. To that end, our Public Review Committee monitors proposed alterations to designated neighborhoods and individual landmarks and testifies at every Landmarks Preservation Commission hearing. We are instituting these Design Awards to showcase the best of what has been done and thereby encourage more high quality design.

Quality design may be deferential or assertive, compatible or contrasting, modern or traditional. The main concern is how convergence between new work and restoration can produce a coherent entity. The awards will be the centerpiece of New Design + Old Places, HDC’s 20th annual preservation conference and will be presented at the opening night reception on Friday, March 7, 2014 at Steelcase.

ELIGIBILITY

We invite entries for all types of good design in historic neighborhoods in all five boroughs– new buildings as well as additions to and alterations of historic ones. Interior alterations will be considered for publicly accessible historic buildings only. Buildings do not need to be designated landmarks or located in historic districts to be eligible. The project must have been completed within the last 30 years. There is no submission fee and applicants may enter multiple projects.

Members of the board of HDC and their immediate family members are not eligible to apply.

JURY

Entries will be evaluated by a jury chaired by James Stewart Polshek, FAIA, and will include prominent design professionals, historians and critics.
