BRINCKERHOFF LANDMARKED!

HDC is happy to report that the Brinckerhoff Cemetery in Fresh Meadows, Queens was landmarked on Tuesday!  The cemetery, which dates back to at least 1730 and is the resting place of some of the area’s earliest settlers, joins 12 other cemeteries which are also designated individual landmarks.  Although no headstones are presently visible, impressive testimony and research delivered by the Fresh Meadows Homeowners Civic Improvement Association and dozens of other supporters (including HDC, of course) at a Public Hearing in May seems to have convinced the LPC that this was much more than an empty lot. You can read more about this interesting piece of colonial Queens in the designation report.  While the cemetery has been through some tough times, the local community, which has rallied for over a decade for its landmarking, is dedicated to seeing it preserved, and HDC will be there to continue helping them to reach that goal.
