Start 2013 with Mies van der Rohe, Phillip Johnson and Pablo Picasso! HDC’s Secret Lives Tours highlight some of the most original and rarely-seen spaces in New York. The series takes attendees inside unique and spectacular spaces in the city, both big and small, to learn about their purpose, history and preservation. Join HDC and architect Belmont Freeman of Belmont Freeman Architects for a tour and in-depth discussion of the ongoing restoration of the Four Seasons restaurant. The tour will conclude with a complimentary cocktail in the famed Grill Room.
The Four Seasons is a rare, successful, and remarkably intact example of an architectural interior conceived as a unified and total work of art. Join HDC for this exclusive Secret Lives event to gain a deeper look, understanding and appreciation of the historical context of this space as well as the future plans of the interior landmark.

Please join the Historic Districts Council as we announce the neighborhoods selected for the 2013 Six to Celebrate program! Come honor the accomplishments of outgoing participants from Bay Ridge, Far Rockaway Beach Bungalows, Morningside Heights, Port Morris, Van Cortlandt Village, Victorian Flatbush; and welcome the possibilities for the new class as they commence a year of preservation campaigns, advocacy efforts, educational outreach, and fabulous events!

At Home in Utopia, written and directed by Michal Goldman, tells the story of the Eastern European garment workers who joined together to create a “Bronx Bohemia” known as the Coops. The Coops were what some would consider the ideal community; based on the philosophies of communal living and designed with the ideas of a bucolic setting in mind, the Coops were a “dream home” to many. Join us for this special screening and panel discussion of “At Home in Utopia”, where several of the former residents and the filmmaker will discuss the film.

The NYC Department of Design and Construction functions as the city’s primary capital construction project manager for civic works such as firehouses, libraries, police precincts, courthouses and senior centers. Joseph LePique will explain how the NYC Department of Design and Construction functions. Jeremy Woodoff will then present a case study of a recent DDC initiative to persuade the Carnegie libraries to re-open their historic interior skylights.
