Once home to the rich and powerful, the northern area of the Lower East Side changed as waves of immigrants arrived during the 19th century and turned the area into a hotbed of radical political thought, birthplace to the counter-culture, and a center for the arts. Abraham Lincoln, James Fenimore Cooper, Yoko Ono and Dee Dee Ramone; they were all here. See footprints left by Joan Crawford. Take a look at the contemporary theatre scene and a glance back to the long ago days of the Yiddish stage.
Meet on the corner of East 8th Street and 3rd Avenue by Cooper Union (across from the cube). Take the 6 to Astor Place, N/ R to 8th Street (walk east after exiting).
Fees for all BCUE tours, unless otherwise, noted are $13 for non-members, $10 for members, $8 for seniors and students with ID.
