A Walking Tour of Historic Libraries in the Village—and One New One!
2014 Pre-Confernce Tour

The 1960s renovation of the Jefferson Market Library in the West Village remains a milestone in adaptive reuse, but this tour will focus on new design in old buildings in the East Village. We will start at a new branch in an old chocolate factory, the Mulberry Street Library; look at the recent interior renovations at the Puck Building; and then walk up Lafayette Street to view the newly-renovated streetfront and lobby of the Public Theater, which was originally the Astor Library. Our tour will conclude at the nearby Ottendorfer Library on Second Avenue which is the City’s oldest free public library having opened in 1884.
This tour will be led by John Bacon, HDC board member and Director of Planned Giving at The New York Public Library.
This tour is part of HDC’s 2013 conference “New Design+Historic Places”. Through the conference we will showcase projects that broaden traditional perceptions of the field of historic preservation and incorporate contemporary design with historic resources.
