Discuss The Cultural And Social History of the Lower East Side Through The Perspective Of Housing. If landscape is history, as Henry James suggested, then housing is the history of NYC. Crank up your imagination, strap on comfortable shoes, and our urban historian Barry Feldman will provide the sites and narrative, as you walk from the edge of Chinatown to Corlear’s Hook.
We will explore housing architecture on the L.E.S.- from the Federal era to today’s expensive condos & co-ops. Walk the streets immortalized by activist/photographer Jacob Riis, and hear tales of the immigrants he championed.
• See Federal and Greek Revival Row houses, Italianate and Beaux-Arts tenements;
• Visit Corlears Hook/Gotham Court – notorious slums, circa 1880;
• See the evolution from pre-law to old law & new law tenements;
• Learn how to tell a tenement from a row house;
• See the ‘luxurious’ Grand Street co-ops –discuss their dramatic impact on this district;
• See synagogues designed to incorporate Moorish and Byzantine elements;
