Participants will learn how energy, environmental and health issues on proposed construction projects can affect the design and construction stages of historic properties. Presenters will use case study examples from New York City and beyond to demonstrate how to integrate sustainable, passive and other green guidelines into historic building renovations and restorations.
Ken Levenson is a registered architect in New York State with 20 years experience as a practicing architect, including 10 years as principal of Ken Levenson Architect PC, based in Brooklyn, NY. A graduate of Pratt Institute, Ken became a Certified Passive House Consultant in 2010, incorporating the Passive House standard into projects, including several historic building renovations in “Brownstone Brooklyn”. Frustrated with the lack of available high-quality building materials and know-how in the building supply industry, Ken became a founding partner in 475 High Performance Building Supply, a company dedicated to providing those products that help transform green building into high-performance building across the US. Ken is also president of NY Passive House, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the Passive House standard, and a founding board member of the American Passive House Network.
Amanda Lehman joined COOKFOX Architects in 2006 and has contributed her expertise in historic preservation and sustainable design to a wide range of projects. Most recently, Amanda played a key role in the development of 130 West 12th Street, a prewar condominium in the heart of Greenwich Village that received LEED Gold-NC certification as well as the 2012 Sustainable Design Award by Global Green USA. Amanda has also worked on a luxury penthouse condo on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, a visitor’s center at a hospital in Cambodia, the green guidelines for existing residential buildings in Lower Manhattan, and the Greening NYC’s Historic Buildings manuals for the Municipal Art Society. Prior to joining COOKFOX, Amanda worked at several firms in San Francisco and New York, as well as at the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. She is also a Board member of the Fine Arts Federation of New York and a former Chair of the AIANY Historic Buildings Committee.
Alex Posner is a licensed Professional Geologist with a Bachelors and Masters degree in Geology and over 33 years of experience in the field of hydrogeology. Over the course of his career, his main focus has been on ground water resource applications in the northeast for the USGS and U.S. EPA in addition to numerous environmental consulting firms. Currently, he is a Project Director at the Office of Sustainable Design at the New York City Department of Design & Construction in Long Island City where his primary role is evaluating the application of geothermal systems on DDC building projects and troubleshooting systems, when problems arise.
Stephen Tilly, AIA, LEED AP, principal of the firm Stephen Tilly, Architect, graduated from M.I.T. with a Master of Architecture. After doing research, planning and urban design work in Boston, Washington and New York, he became a partner in a firm based in New York’s historic Soho district in the 1970s and 1980s. His work there included an award-winning solar house in South Carolina and Film Forum, the first movie theater in Soho. Mr. Tilly has worked since that time in his own firm on projects that reflect a broad range of interests from historic properties to urban design to sustainable planning and design to fine grain architectural design. He is the Chair of the Advisory Council of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Lyndhurst Historic Site. He has also served on the Technical Committee on Sustainability of the Association for Preservation Technology.
