Nearly 50 years ago the New York City Landmarks Law was passed and the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) was established. In the years since, the LPC has become an integral part of the city’s administration with the Commission’s Chairs at the helm, charged with safeguarding the city’s historic, aesthetic, and cultural heritage. Before long a new Chair will join their ranks.
You are invited to a panel discussion with the past Chairs of the LPC to explore the challenges and responsibilities facing the next Chair and the leadership required to help the agency navigate the future. The panel will include Beverly Moss Spatt, Kent Barwick, Gene Norman, Laurie Beckelman, Jennifer Raab, and Sherida Paulsen, and will be moderated by Liz McEnaney, who is currently interviewing the former Chairs as part of a large-scale oral history initiative undertaken by the New York Preservation Archive Project. Join us in a reflection upon administering nearly 50 years of the Landmarks Law and a look forward to the new Chair’s role in shaping the future of preservation in New York City.
