Terra Cotta: Historic Material and Contemporary Use
Louis Sullivan provides a springboard for thinking about terra cotta in modern architecture. Hugh Trumbull, Senior Associate Principal at Kohn Pederson Fox’s New York office, will compare and contrast some of Sullivan’s thoughts to ideas that inform building with terra cotta today, namely, mass production and construction technology. Through a number of projects, KPF has investigated the use of modern terra cotta. Within the context of KPF projects and projects by other modern architects Hugh will explore the properties of the terra cotta. The talk will focus on the CNOOC Headquarters building in Beijing. This building design offers a case study in the use of custom designed glazes that support the architectural concepts of a building. Curtain wall and rain screen technology are utilized in our terra cotta wall design on the tower and podium. CNOOC’s concepts of window dematerialization, screen and scrim highlight the inherent plastic nature and structural capabilities of terra cotta found in today’s methods of manufacturing and construction.
