Please join the Historic Districts Council  for a exclusive, pre-opening tour of the Franklin D. Roosevelt/ Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island. This is a very special opportunity to experience New York’s next great public space before it is officially opened. The park, which is due to  open to the public in October, is located on Roosevelt Island’s South Side and built after the original design of legendary architect Louis Khan. Tour attendees  will be among the first to experience this new space and explore this new monument to one of America’s greatest leaders.

The plans for Four Freedoms Park began almost 40 years ago.  New York City was determined to have an engaging and open space on Roosevelt Island that would also feature a memorial honoring Franklin D. Roosevelt.  The park and monument would sit at the Southern most point of the island “facing the sea he loved, the Atlantic he bridged, the Europe he helped to save and the United Nations he inspired.” Unfortunately, these plans fell apart when Louis Khan, the site’s architect, died suddenly just as New York City went bankrupt. In 2010, ground was finally broken on the project and the new park is scheduled to be opened to the general public in October 2012.
