After a hearing on the City Planning Department’s Jamaica Plan Tuesday night at Hillcrest Jewish Center, 15 members of Community Board 8 unanimously voted not to approve the rezoning initiative. Their recommendation will then be referred to the general CB 8 meeting to be held March 14.

Deborah Carney, deputy director of the Queens office of City Planning, spoke at length about the Jamaica Plan’s impact on Hillside Avenue-how the current zoning designations work and how rezoning would affect the height of buildings along the thoroughfare, allowing developers to build up to eight and in some cases 12 stories high.

Carney made no mention of the number of new residents such development would bring to the area nor of the infrastructure necessary to accommodate them, which was what CB 8 wanted to know.

“Other than allowing for increased density [of population and structures], what do you provide for expansion of services?” asked CB 8 member Steven Konigsberg.
