Automats, Taxi Dances and Vaudeville:  Excavating Manhattans Lost Places of Leisure

In Automats, Taxi Dances, and Vaudeville: Excavating Manhattan’s Lost Places of Leisure (2009), author David Freeland excavates the city’s cultural history and uncovers skeletons of New York’s lost monuments to its nightlife. With a keen eye for architectural detail, Freeland opens doors, climbs onto rooftops, and gazes down alleyways to reveal several of the remaining hidden gems of Manhattan’s 19th and 20th century entertainment industry. From the Atlantic Garden German beer hall in present-day Chinatown to the Lincoln Theater in Harlem, Freeland situates each building within its historical and social context, bringing to life an old New York that took its diversions seriously.

Booktalks are held at The Skyscraper Museum at 39 Battery Place from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. The gallery and exhibition, THE RISE OF WALL STREET are open for viewing from 6:00 pm. All events are free of charge. Please RSVP to  [email protected]  with the name of the program you would like to attend.
