Preservation Rally at City Hall Attended By Activists From Across the City
Despite the unfortunate weather, dozens of neighborhood activists from across New York City attended the rally for preservation at City Hall yesterday morning. Sheltered under the iconic colonnade, speakers from Coney Island, Mount Morris Park, Crown Heights North, Auburndale, Williamsburg, Addisleigh Park, the Grand Concourse, Victorian Flatbush and the Upper West Side spoke passionately about the need to preserve their neighborhoods. “Despite the incredible strides the Landmarks Commission has taken in the past few years, there is still much that needs to be done,” said Simeon Bankoff, HDC’s executive director. “Buildings in historic neighborhoods from Stapleton to Bayside continue to torn down for unwanted, out-of-scale, community-destroying developments. The City must increase its commitment to preserving our neighborhoods and our elected officials need to understand that people want preservation”. The activists were joined by Councilmember Brad Lander, who helped arrange for the rally. In his remarks, CM Lander spoke of two new bills he and CM Jessica Lappin were planning to introduce, one to mandate a survey department for the LPC and the other to make the designation decision-making process more transparent.
