The History and Future of the Bowery

The History and Future of the Bowery

Sponsored by the Bowery Alliance of Neighbors & Two Bridges Neighborhood Council, in conjunction with the New Museum’s “Festival of Ideas”, it will feature film, history, vintage Bowery songs and poetry, and a forum on current efforts to preserve and protect this remarkable street.   The city’s oldest thoroughfare, the Bowery has helped foster everything from tap dance, minstrelsy, vaudeville, Yiddish theater, Beat literature, abstract expressionism, and punk rock. Poised for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, its historic sense of place is sadly threatened by out-of-scale development.
