*** St. Brigid’s ***
The Court has stopped the demolition of St. Brigid¹s until the Court hears the current arguments before it on August 24.

Early this morning the Archdiocese destroyed the 158 year old stained glass windows along the entire East 8th Street side of the building. They were destroyed by workers swinging crowbars.

We cannot understand why the Archdiocese is so angry or so vengeful upon the parishioners here who have devoted their lives to this Church as to so venally destroy the priceless stained glass windows honoring all those counties in Ireland that Potato Famine refugees came from to begin their lives again within the great promise of America. These windows were made in Germany, paid for through the pennies of a poor congregation long ago.

Late yesterday afternoon , Harry Kresky, the lawyer representing the Save St. Brigid’s Committee, spoke with the lawyer for the Archdiocese, discussing the court hearing today, and asking the Archdiocese to delay demolition until the Court hearing today. The Archdiocese lawyer so much as hung up on Harry Kresky. The Archdiocese rushed to destroy the stained
glass windows this morning. There have been other times in history when the powerful have rushed to smash glass windows and laugh in the agony of crashing crystal.

It is a shame, within a Church built upon land once owned by people who long ago needed to be convinced to sell to Catholics for a Church, that the Archdiocese would destroy the sacred for silver.

The Department of Buildings [DOB] delayed the demolition mid-morning today, finding unsafe conditions.A part of the Church was saved in the time given. We thank the DOB.

The 9th Precinct acted with respect to our community.

A community member, Eric Rassi, delayed the demolition by climbing to the highest point on the Church and crying for the Archdiocese to hear the pain of our community.
