Fire Engine Company 55, built in 1898-99 for the New York City Fire Department, is a distinguished work of architecture designed by R. H. Robertson. It was the architect’s only commission for the New York City Fire Department. It combines features from both the Beaux-Arts and Romanesque Revival styles. Among its most notable features are the company banner carved in stone above the monumental arched apparatus bay and the large oval windows draped in garlands that frame it.
