Scenic Landmarks include public parks, plazas, and parkways operated by the New York City government. Since the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) was empowered to designate scenic landmarks in 1973 the commission has designated 12 sites, only three this century. This class will discuss the history of scenic landmark designation in New York City and its complicated present. Jeremy Woodoff will explain what the Landmarks Law says about scenic landmarks and their regulation. Participants will learn about the LPC's "Olmsted Project, the revitalization of NYC's historic parks, and the current state of scenic landmarks.
