Landmark West!* invites you to join us for a walking tour with architectural historian and author Andrew Scott Dolkart. Our first stop is the Dakota Apartments, an individual landmark designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh (also architect of the Plaza Hotel) and built from 1880-84. Prompted by the construction of the Columbus Avenue elevated train with a stop at 72nd Street, developer and Singer Sewing Machine magnate Edward S. Clark laid plans for the Dakota when most of the Upper West Side was still farmland. We will explore the rowhouse mid-blocks between Central Park West and Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues, including rows developed by Clark, designed by Hardenbergh and developed at the same time as the Dakota. These blocks boast many eclectic architectural styles that epitomize the rich beauty and variety of the Upper West Side/Central Park West Historic District (designated in 1990). Our tour will end in the vicinity of the former Dakota Stable (now the Pyramid Garage) on Amsterdam Avenue at 77th Street. Together with the former New York Cab Company Stable (now the Berkley Garage) two blocks south at 75th Street, the Dakota Stable is one of New York’s last surviving commercial stable buildings, where middle-class West Siders kept their horses much like people keep automobiles in public garages today. “Stable row” has been on LW’s landmark designation wish list since 1986.

Space is limited. Advanced registration is required.
