ST. BRIGID DODGES DEMOLITION
By DAREH GREGORIAN

August 25, 2006 — One of the city’s oldest Roman Catholic churches got a reprieve from the wrecking ball yesterday, but time may be running out for the 157-year-old Church of St. Brigid.

After a packed hearing in Manhattan Supreme Court, Justice Barbara Kapnick let stand her order barring the Archdiocese of New York from knocking the East Village church down until both sides file more arguments.

Kapnick said she expects to issue a ruling shortly after Labor Day.

Former parishioner Edwin Torres, who was married in the church, called the ruling “a temporary victory.”

“It’s not over yet,” he said.

Torres and other supporters of the church held a rally outside the courthouse before the hearing, urging the archdiocese not to tear down the beloved Eighth Street structure.

The church has been closed for five years, and the archdiocese says it will cost $7 million to repair, money it doesn’t have. Supporters say it would only cost $325,000.
