HDC, in partnership with the Red Hook Business Alliance (RHBA), has undertaken an investigation into the impact of the new Brooklyn Marine Terminal (BMT) on historic properties in Red Hook. Currently, there are only two locally designated landmarks in Red Hook, but there are many other residences and commercial buildings that could be eligible for landmark designation or listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2024, the City of New York, New York state, the Port Authority, and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) agreed to update Brooklyn Marine Terminal (BMT) into a modern maritime port and vibrant mixed-use community hub. According to the EDC, “The project proposes to create new housing, commercial and public spaces, and economic opportunities in Red Hook.”
HDC is concerned that the low rise, mixed use character of Red Hook will be affected by the BMT’s construction well beyond the standard 400 feet boundary established in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for consideration of historic resources. We have identified over more than 70 possible historic resources (including one historic district) that are not considered within the boundary but could be affected by this massive project in the future. HDC believes all eligible historic resources should be given a fair chance to be considered for landmark designation.
The deadline to submit comments on the Draft Scope of Work (DSOW) for the BMT Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has been extended to March 31, 2026. We are asking community members to write to the Mayor’s Office asking that the boundary for the EIS is expanded to encompass more of Red Hook’s irreplaceable historic resources.
