Say No to the NYU Expansion Plan

Join HDC, NYU Faculty against the Sexton Plan, GVSHP and many other preservation groups this Friday, June 29 for a rally on the steps of City Hall at 8:30 am and the City Council public hearing at 9:30 am, and tell the Council to ‘VOTE NO’  New York University’s plans to expand in the open space and low-rise areas around Washington Square Village and the landmarked University Village.  The plan would lift long-standing neighborhood zoning protections, open-space preservation requirements, and urban renewal deed restrictions in order to allow the university to build 2.5 million square feet, the equivalent of the Empire State Building.  Although a few changes to the plan have been made, the overall plan still threatens to destroy the designed open spaces of the Washington Square South area and irreparably damage its character.

If you have not done so already, please send a letter or call your City Councilmember to let them know this is an issue you care about.

Tuesday is Designation Day at LPC!

Join HDC tomorrow at LPC (Municipal Building, 1 Centre Street, 9th floor) to support the proposed East Village-Lower East Side Historic District. This neighborhood, rich in immigrant and artistic history, not to mention fantastic architecture, is still endangered. Can’t make it in the afternoon?  Stop by in the morning and cheer as the first of the West End Historic District Expansions and new Park Place Historic District in Brooklyn are designated! And remember, landmarking isn’t the end when it comes to preservation. Most of tomorrow will be dedicated to applications for Certificates of Appropriateness for major alterations, including these items that HDC will be testifying on, including a new building in SoHo!

Defending Preservation

HDC recently held a meeting to discuss the pressing issues surrounding the attacks on New York City’s Landmark Law. In conjecture with the meeting, a coalition has been organized to counter the recently formed ‘Responsible Landmarks Coalition’. Read more on this issue, join our coalition, and tell us your thoughts by visiting our website http://hdc.org/featured/help-save-the-landmarks-law.

~Donate to HDC~

We need your support to continue the campaign! By donating you are aiding in the fight to preserve New York City’s irreplaceable architecture and history. HDC is the only organization that works with communities in all five boroughs. That’s a lot of buildings! http://hdc.org/donate.
