South Side of Ellis Island Endangered Again

From The New York Landmarks Conservancy

The New York Landmarks Conservancy has been involved in efforts to restore the South Side of Ellis Island since 1997. We did conditions reports on all the buildings of the former hospital complex located there; stabilized one of the buildings ourselves; garnered national and international publicity for the South Side and helped form a national coalition that successfully lobbied Congress for money to stabilize the buildings.

For the past ten years, the Conservancy has been on the Board of Save Ellis Island, a national group formed to restore and reuse the South Side buildings. SEI has put $65 million into the buildings, fully restoring one of them and planning permanent uses for the others.

Now Save Ellis Island may be forced to close because fiscal problems have severely decreased support. If SEI closes, the South Side buildings may once again deteriorate.
