Who's Going to be the Next Jane Jacobs?

The Rockefeller Foundation has announced the creation of a Jane Jacobs Medal to honor the activist, author and urbanist. The foundation will award the medal annually to recognize two living individuals whose creative vision for the urban environment has significantly contributed to the vibrancy and variety of New York City. The first individual will be recognized for leadership and lifetime contribution. The second, for new ideas and activism: a Jane Jacobs of tomorrow. The 2007 Jane Jacobs Medals will be accompanied by prizes totaling $200,000.
The Foundation is currently seeking nominations for the medal’s first recipients. Nominating is a simple process that involves filling out an online form. The deadline for nominations is March 2 and recipients will be announced in June. An award ceremony will take place in September, in conjunction with a new exhibit on Jacobs that will open at the Municipal Art Society.
