Bay Ridge is a neighborhood of nearly 90,000 people that sits at the Brooklyn end of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The area’s development exploded at the turn of the 20th century due to access improvements in trolley, elevated railroad, and eventually subway service. Bay Ridge’s built environment appears much the same today as it did nearly a century ago.

The remarkable architecture from this era is significantly intact, and includes mansions whose residents enjoy panoramic views from its miles of shoreline, and stately Art Deco 1920s-30s apartment buildings, with original and ornate lobbies. In addition, it has historic sites associated with both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and features Fort Hamilton, an active military fort that dates from 1825

Bob Singleton, Executive Director of the Greater Astoria Historical Society, will take us on a virtual tour of the area, which was a 2011 Historic Districts Council Six to Celebrate. It will feature images of “The Ridge” from his extensive collection of New York City postcards.
