In 2023, after decades of community advocacy, Bushwick, Brooklyn won the designation of the Linden Street Historic District, the first historic district in the neighborhood. But the 32 brick and brownstone row houses on Linden St. are just a few of Bushwick’s architectural treasures. Other gems include neo-renaissance and bow-fronted row houses, free-standing mansions, and towering churches. Join the Historic Districts Council and the Bushwick Historic Preservation Association for a tour of Bushwick led by architectural historian Suzanne Spellen.
We’ll see some of Bushwick’s most unique architecture, learn about the history that shaped this neighborhood, from the 19th and early 20th century brewers and magnates who built some of Bushwick’s most impressive structures, to the years of municipal neglect and disinvestment that robbed Bushwick of much of its historic fabric, and consider what “contextual assessment” of historic resources means in contemporary Bushwick.
