In July of 1863, a wave of deadly riots swept through New York City. What began as opposition to a newly enforced draft for the Civil War quickly devolved into racially motivated attacks on Black men, women, and children, as well as their allies. Days later, the deadliest riot in American history had claimed the lives of over a hundred people. Thousands were injured and the city lay in a state of fiery haze. Chelsea, home to a large Black community and prominent abolitionists, found itself the target of some of these violent mobs. Today, remnants of this dark chapter in our city’s history can still be found there. Join tour guide and preservationist Patrick Waldo on an exploration of these connections, retracing the steps of the Civil War Draft Riots in Chelsea.
