The Arrival and Departure of Business & Industry on Staten Island…

Discover Staten Island’s industrial past! A fascinating world of manufacturing where everything from bricks to beer to bun cakes were created. With the 1819 opening of the New-York Dyeing and Printing Establishment in West New Brighton business and industry had officially arrived at Staten Island. Soon guns were being made on Lafayette Avenue in New Brighton; lead was being manufactured by John Jewett and Sons at what we now call Richmond Terrace in Port Richmond (leaving residue that is having last consequences on the community today!). An influx of German immigrants to Staten Island in the 1830s saw the establishment of Stapleton beer breweries, while another prominent German immigrant set up a flourishing brick making business in what was once the community of Androvetteville. From a rural economy to a proliferation of factories, processing plants, foundries, and quarries, Staten Island became the site of specialized enterprises that influenced economics, immigration, community development, and the environment of Staten Island.
