The Staten Island Museum announces:

The History of Staten Island – Part I
Wednesdays, September 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30, 2009, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
at the History Archives & Library of the Staten Island Museum
Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island

Cost: $50/$30 members for the series of five presentations.
$12/$8 for individual presentations.

Join us for The History of Staten Island – Part I. A five session series led by Curator of History Patricia M. Salmon. Fascinating discussions on Staten Island’s first residents the Lenape will be followed by a look at the arrival of Giovanni da Verrazzano and Henry Hudson; the Pig, Whiskey, and Peach Wars; permanent settlement; Dutch, French and English settlers; slavery on Staten Island; the Revolutionary War; Staten Island’s farming legacy; businesses and industries of the 18th and 19th centuries (including the New-York Dyeing & Printing Establishment, Kreischer Brickworks, SS White, Proctor & Gamble and more!); houses of worship; historic cemeteries; and such influential figures as Governor Thomas Dongan, General George Howe, Frederick Law Olmsted, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Erastus Wiman, William T. Davis, Borough President George Cromwell and many others!

Look for The History of Staten Island Part II this fall. Such facilities and institutions as the Farm Colony, Sailors’ Snug Harbor, Seaman’s Retreat, Sea View Hospital, and Willowbrook State School will be discussed, as will historic preservation; park conservation and environmental history; the Staten Island ferry; movies made on Staten Island and old movie houses; and such cultural institutions as the Staten Island Zoo, Chinese Scholar’s Garden, Staten Island Museum, Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, Alice Austen House, Historic Richmondtown, Noble Maritime Collection and more!
