Item 5
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
BOROUGH OF MANHATTAN
134316- Block 612, lot 38-
37 Charles Street – Greenwich Village Historic District
A rowhouse built in 1869. Application is to construct a rear yard addition.

We find the work proposed for the stoop and areaway approvable, but HDC asks that the rear yard addition keep to one story like those of the rest of the row.  While it is not as deep as the neighbors (some of which most likely predate designation), the addition would remove an awful lot of historic fabric and disrupt this nice stretch of intact façades each three-stories tall.

LPC determination:  no action

Item 2
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
BOROUGH OF BROOKLYN
137092- Block 259, lot 26-
7 Columbia Place – Brooklyn Heights Historic District
A Greek Revival style frame house built in 1848. Application is to construct a new dormer.

A dormer is not necessary here as this is not a case of needing head room or light an air for an attic.  Instead, the dormer is to be used as a skylight for the bedroom below.  HDC asks that an actual skylight be considered so that the roof line of this 1848 frame house is no disrupted.  If a dormer must be added we ask that a more plain design matching the feel of this charming, simple Greek Revival style home be used.

LPC determination:  approved with modifications
