Six to Celebrate Far Rockaway Virtual Tour – October 20

October 20, 2021

5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Via Zoom

Far Rockaway! The Canarsie Indians’ name for the place has stuck. “Rekowacky” meant “place of our people.” No border between New York City and any surrounding community could be starker: this is where the suburban ritziness of Nassau County’s Five Towns meets the inner-city grittiness of New York City.

The Rockaway Beach Bungalow Historic District, historic beach homes, from Beach 24th to Beach 26th streets, have survived against developers and hurricanes with the help of the Beachside Bungalow Preservation Association.

Far Rockaway is a thriving neighborhood containing surprising historic elements that make it ripe for urban exploration. Tiffany-windowed churches stand near inner-city projects. Individual properties, such as the Russell Sage Memorial Church, Trinity Chapel, and United States Post Office are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
