The Historic House Trust invites you to….
The Emergence of Yankee Architecture
A Conversation with Architectural Historian Barry Lewis
Thursday, February 26, 2009
6 – 8pm
Cocktail reception will precede the presentation
Through the lens of sites in the Historic House Trust’s collection, Barry Lewis will explore the emergence of Yankee architecture during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. From farmhouses to manors to mansions, Yankee architecture was characterized by simplicity, ruggedness, and minimalism. In stark contrast to the architecture occurring in Europe, this Americanized expression of the built environment foreshadowed trends in 21st-century architecture.
