Bowne House

Designated February 15, 1966

Built in 1661, this is the oldest house in Queens, which makes it is an example of English colonial architecture. It belonged to John Bowne, a strong advocate of religious freedom in a time when some religions were suppressed. Nine generation of the Bownes family lived in this house. Since 1946, it has been functioning as a museum.
