This building (1902-4) was designed by the prolific architect Bradford Lee Gilbert for the Fire Engine Company. One of its most distinguishable features is the step gable, associated with early 17th Century architecture in Holland. Gilbert was a prominent architect known for pioneering the use of steel frame and for building the first skyscraper in Manhattan, the Tower Building.
