This theater was designed to house the Theater Guild, a subscription repertory company with a special place in the history of Broadway theater. It later housed the American National Theater Academy (ANTA), an equally distinguished, subsidized theater company. Its design by C. Howard Crane and Kenneth Franzheim matched the unusual program of the client with an unusual and exceptionally handsome design modeled on 15th-century Italian villas. For over half a century the ANTA Theater has served as hane to countless numbers of the plays through which the Broadway theater has come to personify American theater.
