The centerpiece of this district is the cobblestone Jumel Terrace flanked by two-story, wooden row houses built in 1882. Other row houses in brick, limestone and brownstone were constructed between 1890 and 1902. In 1909 a brick and limestone apartment house was built in the Federal Revival style.

The neighborhood is named for Fort Washington, a fortification constructed at the highest point on the island of Manhattan by Continental Army troops during the American Revolutionary War, to defend the area from the British forces.
