From the 1860s until just before World War I, Ladies’ Mile was the city’s most popular and fashionable shopping district. Gilded Age New York shopped in the elegant, cast-iron commercial palaces of A.T. Stewart’s, Stern’s, and Lord and Taylor’s. The famous 1901-1903 Flatiron building is included in this district.
