This interior represents the mid-20th century Modernism. This building is arguably Manhattan’s most transparent structure, revealing two elegantly spacious banking floors that were carefully planned to be as prominent to passing pedestrians as the glass and aluminum exterior. Many distinctive and original artworks still remain in this interior, including the circular stainless steel vault door, as well as the white marble piers and luminous ceilings that were intended to minimize glare and shadow, and it may be the earliest example of this lighting technology to survive in New York City.
