Joseph Urban is credited for revolutionizing the stage design in the United States, and his work in the New School for Social Research was the first time that the techniques and principles of the International style were used in New York. The leaders of the New School wanted to convey progressive and liberal ideas through this building. The rounded ceiling of the auditorium is composed of a series of concentric rings, and served as a precedent for the Radio City Music Hall, one of New York’s best known theatres. The auditorium has sleek materials such as polished stone and metal elements, and a well-conceived color scheme.
