Prospect Cemetery

Designated January 11, 1977

This cemetery is the oldest in Jamaica, and one of the few remaining Colonial cemeteries in Queens. It is located on a land that belonged to a local tribe of Indians, the “Yamecah,” which means beaver. The cemetery contains a 19th-century chapel, a focal point of the place.
