This district is the largest concentration of full and partial cast-iron facades anywhere in the world. Early residential buildings from the first decades of the 19th century remain, but it is the commercial architecture of the last half of the century that characterizes the neighborhood. Large display windows between columns of cast-iron, mimicking carved stone, showed off vast interior shopping spaces, while upper floors operated as office, storage and manufacturing spaces.
