Eero Saarinen & Associates revolutionized air terminal design through its use of daring concrete and glass forms. The TWA terminal incorporates airport technology adopted at the beginning of the jet aircraft era. The main portion of the terminal has an upward soaring quality. Saarinen;s intention was “to interpret the sensation of flying.”
Saarinen’s design for the TWA Flight Center is the exemplar of expressionistic architectural trends of the late 1950s and 1960s. The architecture and other features of this building have a special character and value in the development, heritage and cultural characteristics of New York City. The Interior is open and accessible to the public, and the public is customarily invited to it.
