Via ZoomIn this class, a former staff member in the Historic Preservation Office of the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) Jeremy Woodoff will discuss what the agency’s role and responsibilities are, how the existing built environment is incorporated, and what the process is if work is being done in a historic district, on an individual landmark, or on a building that might be significant architecturally but not designated. You will learn how the DDC was created, the different divisions within the agency, and how they’re organized. In addition, he will explain the process for getting a project from initiation through construction, some of the problems with the process, and how the DDC works with other agencies including the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Public Design Commission.

6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Via ZoomIn 2023, after decades of community advocacy, Bushwick, Brooklyn won the designation of the Linden Street Historic District, the first historic district in the neighborhood. But the 32 brick and brownstone row houses on Linden St. are just a few of Bushwick’s architectural treasures. Other gems include neo-renaissance and bow-fronted row houses, free-standing mansions, and towering churches. Join the Historic Districts Council and the Bushwick Historic Preservation Association for a tour of Bushwick led by architectural historian Suzanne Spellen.
We’ll see some of Bushwick’s most unique architecture, learn about the history that shaped this neighborhood, from the 19th and early 20th century brewers and magnates who built some of Bushwick’s most impressive structures, to the years of municipal neglect and disinvestment that robbed Bushwick of much of its historic fabric, and consider what “contextual assessment” of historic resources means in contemporary Bushwick.
Friend of HDC / Senior $15; General Admission $20
