Six to Celebrate Penn Development Area Tour

    Sep 17, 2022

    Saturday, September 17, 2022

    11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

In 2022, HDC selected the area around Penn Station as a Six to Celebrate recipient due to the historic resources in the area threatened with demolition by the proposed Empire State Development Corporation’s Pennsylvania Station Project. Almost 40 buildings in the area have been identified in the Environment Impact Statement as being worthy of local, state or national landmark recognition. Losing these structures and the neighboring buildings would create a void in a vital part of midtown Manhattan. Join Save Chelsea’s David Holowka on this walk through the proposed redevelopment area to visit some of the threatened sites such as the Penn Station Service Building, the Heatherton Building, the Stewart Hotel (formerly Hotel Clinton), the Gimbels Store and Skybridge, and more.

  • Cultural Landmarks in the Garifuna Community

Cultural Landmarks in the Garifuna Community

    Sep 27, 2022

    Tuesday, September 27, 2022

    6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

    Via Zoom

On September 27th at 6:00 PM via Zoom, join us for a presentation about cultural landmarks and places of significance in the Garifuna community in New York City.

Garifunas are primarily from Honduras and their history and presence in New York City can be particularly seen in the South Bronx. Places such as Hunts Point Palace located at 953 Southern Blvd, or Happy Land Social Club, formerly located at 1963 Southern Blvd, all hosted cultural events that were significant to the identity of Garifunas in the South Bronx.

In this presentation, Mirtha Colon, an Honduran-born Garifuna activist and social worker who assists Caribbean migrants in The Bronx, will showcase examples of cultural sites and will detail the stories behind those places. The program will explore questions such as “What makes a cultural landmark?” and how sites significant to the Garifuna community can be preserved, celebrated, and commemorated.

This presentation is free and open to the public. South Bronx residents are particularly encouraged to attend. Anyone who wants to know what a cultural landmark is and the different ways we can celebrate and preserve them, will find this conversation interesting.
