Six to Celebrate - Lower Park Slope Tour

    Feb 7, 2021

    Sunday, February 7, 2021
    2:00 - 3:30 PM
The Lower Slope merges into the Gowanus Canal area and contains sites of great historical importance, along with many more blocks of fine row houses and small apartment buildings. On August 27, 1776, the Battle of Long Island raged around the Old Stone House. Washington Park was the home to an early baseball team that evolved into the legendary Brooklyn Dodgers. None of the lower Slope is landmarked yet.

    Upper Manhattan Preservation Meeting

    Feb 9, 2021

The Historic Districts Council has started a preservation group in Upper Manhattan, which meets once a month to share ideas, concerns, experiences and priorities related to cultural and architectural preservation.

Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 9th at 6:00 pm via Zoom. Mathew will be moderating a conversation with other members of Manhattan’s Community Board 12, including Wayne Benjamin, Joe Amodio, and Vivian Ducat.

Their conversation is described as follows:

"Securing landmark status for a neighborhood or individual building requires hours of work ranging from researching and writing a Request for Evaluation, to collaborating with neighbors and community leaders, to garnering support from elected officials, neighboring institutions, and building owners.

Most often, years can pass from an initial idea for a landmark until the final designation, if the Landmarks Preservation Commission agrees that the suggested building or neighborhood is suitable for landmarking. So what compels people to start this process—and keeps them going in the face of setbacks, obstacles, and downright refusal?
