HDC’s walking tour of Hunts Point in early 2020

The Manida Street Historic District in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx was designated in June of 2020. This was the result of a tireless campaign on the part of community leaders and elected officials passionate to preserve the area’s historic treasures. Maria Torres is one of the district’s many supporters.  She is the President and Chief Operating Officer of The Point, an organization that is located near Manida Street and is dedicated to youth development and the cultural and economic revitalization of the Hunts Point neighborhood.

Join us on Monday November 15th at 5:00 pm via Zoom as Maria speaks about the designation process of Manida Street and the communities that call it home. Her presentation will be preceded by an overview of the Landmarks Preservation Commissions’s designation report.

This is an opportunity to learn about a successful grassroots preservation effort that lasted many years and culminated in a landmark designation. Maria’s passion for her community not only has led to community development in Hunts Point, but has also helped the Historic Districts Council advance its outreach in the Bronx. With the help of Maria and other community members, HDC has conducted walking tours and other community workshops focused on historic preservation in Hunts Point.
