Now in its 12th year, Six to Celebrate is HDC’s annual program of preservation priorities. As part of the program HDC supports six chosen recipients in their preservation goals throughout the year and beyond. Support includes expertise and guidance on an advocacy campaign, help on communicating their message, planning of walking tours and other programs promoting the community, and a reimbursable grant of up to $1,000 to support preservation-related activities. 2022 Six to Celebrate walking tours

“HDC provides a strong base of support for the preservation process. Every property has its own individual challenges. But after conducting the research for the history of a number of properties, HDC has a significant amount of professionals to assist with the landmarking process.” – Richard Vitacco, Van Nest

Since the program’s inception in 2011, HDC has helped create 4 National Register districts, 36 New York City Individual Landmarks, 9 New York City historic districts, a contextual down-zoning to maintain neighborhood scale and character, and 19 neighborhood surveys, resulting in the documentation of thousands of buildings in all five boroughs. In addition, HDC has also assisted in leveraging over $115,000 in private and public grants for these community-driven projects.

This year, HDC has additional support for this program with a grant from the Ford Foundation. This new funding will allow HDC to expand the program’s community engagement efforts to enable Six to Celebrate groups to share their stories in increasingly innovative ways. By using tools such as social media, printed and digitized material, storytelling, videos, and other communications resources, we will enhance and make a more accessible framework for community engagement throughout New York City.

The Six to Celebrate program also includes the production of a walking tour guide that highlights significant sites in the community:

The deadline to apply is December 31, 2022.
