The Dutch town of Boswick was settled in 1661. Most of its settlers were farmers. Beginning around 1850, German immigrants fleeing civil war in the German states began settling in what was now called Bushwick. Many of these newcomers established new businesses in some aspects of the food industry – as grocers, sausage and other provision makers, tobacconists and brewers. The streets of Bushwick are a map, highlighting the industrial, residential, civic and recreational history and architecture that made it a successful and prosperous community. Today, much of that built environment is in danger of being forever erased and forgotten as the neighborhood is experiencing an unparalleled surge of popularity and growth. Our virtual tour of Bushwick, led by architectural historian Suzanne Spellen, highlights the best of this great neighborhood. You will meet the entrepreneurs, architects and people who shaped Bushwick in the past, and the efforts of those who seek to preserve that legacy today.
